1. Appointments – (Information Only – No Action Required)

a. Mr. Deacon Chapin to the position of Guidance Counselor at Watertown High School, effective for the 2006-2007 school year, being hired on Step 2, with 1 year of experience, Master’s Degree, at an annual contractual salary of $39,930 + 10 additional days for a total salary of $42,077.00.

b. Ms. Colleen Downey to the position of Grade 6 Teacher at Heminway Park School, effective for the 2006-2007 school year, being hired on Step 2, with 1 year of experience, Bachelor’s Degree, plus 15 additional credits at an annual contractual salary of $38,048.00.

c. Ms. Margaret Jamieson to the position of One to One Paraprofessional at John Trumbull Primary School starting August 30, 2006 for 16.0 hours paid per week at an hourly rate of $11.45.

d. Ms. Ellen L. Krafick to the position of Remedial Reading teacher at Swift Middle School effective for the 2006-2007 school year, being hired on Step 10, with 11 years of experience, Master’s Degree, at a contractual annual salary of $57,042.00.

e. Ms. Lauren O’Brien to the position of Speech Pathologist in the August Extended Summer Program II scheduled to run the first two weeks of August 2006, ten days, 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., for a salary of $1500.00.

f. Ms. Dana Packer to the position of long-term substitute English teacher at Watertown High School effective August 28, 2006 through December 31, 2006, being paid $65.00 per diem for the first ten days, and on the 11th day, paid first step of the teacher’s contract at a salary of $35,350.00 prorated.

g. Ms. Annette Pietro to the position of Special Education teacher in the August Extended Summer Program II to run the first two weeks of August 2006, ten days, for a salary of $1,500.00.

h. Ms. Kathy Pilecki to the position of paraprofessional in the August Extended Summer Program II to run first two weeks in August 2006, ten days, at a salary according to contract.

i. Ms. Suzanne Porter to the position of part time (.37) Special Education teacher in the Parochial Schools for the 2006-2007 school year, being hired on Step 10, 11 years of experience, Masters Degree, at a contractual annual salary of $57,042.00 prorated equaling $21,106.00.

j. Ms. Maura Quatrano to the position of Family and Consumer Science teacher at Swift Middle School, effective for the 2006-2007 school year, being hired on Step 2, with one year of experience, Bachelor’s Degree, at a contractual annual salary of $37,648.00.

k. Ms. Dorothy Rinaldi to the position of Grade 4 teacher at Polk School effective for the 2006-2007 school year, being hired on Step 2, Masters Degree, with one year of experience, at an annual contractual salary of $39,930.00.

l. Ms. Marissa Sinopoli to the position of paraprofessional in the August Extended Summer Program II to run the first two weeks of August 2006, 10 days, at a salary that is according to contract.

m. Mr. Gregory Valente to the position of Science Teacher at Watertown High School effective for the 2006-2007 school year, being hired on Step 3, 2 years of experience, with a Master’s Degree, at an annual contractual salary of $41,642.00.

n. Ms. Beth Susann Herrick to the position of Special Education teacher at Watertown High School effective for the 2006-2007 school year, being hired on Step 7, with 6 years of experience, Bachelors Degree, at an annual contractual salary of $45,634.00.

2. Resignations – (Information Only – No Action Required)

a. Ms. Maryjane Hanssen from the position of Special Education teacher at Watertown High School effective July 26, 2006 to accept another position.

b. Mrs. Stephanie Hawtrey from the position of Remedial Reading teacher at Swift Middle School, effective July 1, 2006, for the purpose of retirement.

c. Ms. Jennifer Maldonado from the position of paraprofessional at John Trumbull Primary School, effective August 3, 2006, for personal reasons.

d. Mr. Richard Sansoucy from the position of Assistant Principal of Watertown High School, effective October 1, 2006, to accept another position.

3. Update on School Opening

An update on the school opening for 2006-2007 will be presented by the Superintendent.

4. Superintendent’s Goals for the 2006-2007 School Year – First Reading

The Superintendent’s Goals for the 2006-2007 School Year are presented this evening to the Board for the first reading. (See Attachment A.)

L. Action Items – Adoption of Items to be Approved by Consent

a. Consideration of the Approval of Salary Increases for 2006-2007 for Non-affiliated Staff and Professional Development / Tuition Reimbursement

1. It is recommended that the Board approve of salary increases for 2006-2007 for the following non-affiliated staff retroactive to July 1, 2006:

Mr. Charles Beliveau, Facilities Manager – 4%

Ms. Maggie Dreher, Food Service Director – 3.5%

Ms. Amelia Grover, Director of Budget/Financial Planning – 4%

Ms. Betsy Hackett, Director of Special Services – 3.5%

Mr. Todd LoFrese, Director of Operations/Technology – 3.5%

Ms. Barbara Marciano, Administrative Assistant – 3.5%

Dr. Philip A. Pelosi, Assistant Superintendent – 3.5%

Mr. Michael Simmons, Network Coordinator – 3.5%

Mr. Joseph Stofko, Systemwide Computer Network Coordinator– 3.5%

Dr. Joseph V. Erardi, Jr., Superintendent of Schools – 3.5%

2. It is recommended that the Board approve of $7,500 maximum contribution by the Board of Education to be used for continuing education / advanced coursework / professional development that directly relates to the unaffiliates’ job responsibilities and descriptions.

b. Consideration of the Approval of Appointees to Board of Directors of the Watertown Education Enrichment Trust Fund – Second Reading

The Watertown Education Enrichment Trust Fund shall be under the jurisdiction of its Board of Directors. The Board of Directors shall consist of five members. Two members shall be the Superintendent of Schools and the Assistant Superintendent of Schools. One member shall be appointed by the Board of Education based upon the recommendation of the Watertown Parent Group Alliance. Two members shall be appointed by the Board of Education.

Presented for the second reading tonight and for Board approval is the name of Nadine Savage, PTA/PTO member.

Presented for the second reading tonight and for Board approval as community members are the names of Jean King and Maureen Caine.

1. It is recommended that the Board approve of Nadine Savage to serve on the Board of Directors of the Watertown Education Enrichment Trust Fund as a PTA/PTO member.

2. It is recommended that the Board approve of Jean King and Maureen Caine to serve on the Board of Directors of the Watertown Education Enrichment Trust Fund as community members.

c. Consideration of the Approval of Special Education Transportation

Curtin Transportation was the low bidder for the Special Education Transportation for the 06-07, 07-08, and 08-09 school years.

It is recommended that the Board approve of awarding the bid for Special Education Transportation to Curtin Transportation for the 06-07, 07-08, and 08-09 school years.

d. Consideration of the Approval of Acceptance of Gifts

1. Ms. Sarah DeLeo, Developmental Pre-K teacher at John Trumbull Primary School, would like to donate a Dell computer and monitor with an approximate value of $500.00 to the John Trumbull Primary School preschool program.

2. The Community Crusade for Children, Inc. would like to donate $110.00 from the Community Crusade for Children’s Kiducation Fund to the Watertown Public Schools. These funds were generated from the donation containers at Rite Aid for the 4th Quarter 2005.

It is recommended that the Board approve of the acceptance of these gifts and letters of thanks to be sent to the donors.

e. Consideration of the Approval of Field for $600,000 State Grant

The Superintendent will provide additional information regarding the $600,000 state grant to the Board of Education.

The Town Council has requested the Board of Education to take action on where they feel the field should be located.

f. Consideration of the Approval of the Sport of Lacrosse

Administration is prepared to present to the Board an update on the sport of Lacrosse in the Watertown Public Schools.

It is recommended that the Board take action on Lacrosse.

g. Consideration of the Approval of Leaves of Absence

1. Mr. Robert Sorensen, Guidance Counselor at Watertown High School, has requested an emergency medical leave of absence commencing August 28, 2006 for approximately two to three weeks, with use of accumulated sick time and personal time, and with a medical doctor’s note to return.

2. Ms. Wendy Hulme, Special Education teacher at Judson School, requests a Family Medical Leave of Absence, commencing August 28, 2006 for approximately one month with use of accumulated sick time and use of personal time.

It is recommended that the Board approve of a Family Medical Leave of Absence for Ms. Wendy Hulme, Special Education teacher at Judson School, commencing August 28, 200 for approximately one month with use of accumulated sick time and use of personal time.
